I love her laugh deep and rich, it lifts the day like sunshine. What a glorious day to be alive, she laughs. It’s a rainy-season dream, but the sky is clear. We’re at the abandoned campsite where I found her dying six months ago. Mama’s sitting on a slab of rock in the shade of a termite mound. Cows graze freely in the grasses, cluster for shade beneath the broad-boughed acacia trees, and wander around thickets of scrub brush. The bush land stretches farther than I can see. We’re on Granny Thela’s cattle post outside Tiro. ![]()

7/6/2023 0 Comments Winterlight kristen britain![]() ![]() There are several battles in numerous locations, involving old allies, as well as new. ![]() From there, the plot centers around Sacoridia fighting the Second Empire and their raider allies and Karigan fighting mental battles with her dead torturer. Warning also involves a great scene between the King and Karigan, as well as the King’s Aunt. But Karigan was not the only person who was kidnapped, and together, the captives find a way to escape and warn King and Captain. Unfortunately, on her way back to Saccor City, she is ambushed and kidnapped by a mysterious group who turn out to be in league with the Second Empire. We meet up with Karigan on the road, returning from meeting with the Ph’edrose. Britain heard all of our cries, and was just patiently waiting to release this book. ![]() But my happiness about book 6 was far surpassed by Winterlight, the upcoming book 7. Mirror Sight (book 5) threw me for a loop, so I was happy to get back to “normal” in Firebrand (book 6). Britain does take many years to write her novels, causing fans to cry in the interim and read fan-fiction, but boy howdy, this book was worth the wait. Now, if you are like me, and have been reading the Green Rider series at least since the publication of First Rider’s Call, then you are going to be happy. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Garies soon run afoul of prejudice – particularly from their neighbors, the Stevens. After much discussion, his family accepts. He wins a prize at school, and a wealthy white woman offers to take him to the country for the summer. The other major character in the book is Charles Ellis, the talented young son who was born a free Black, who must fight White prejudice to get a place in the world. The goal? To get freedom for Emily and the children. Clarence Garie (a White slave owner) and his true love, Emily (his Mixed slave and mother of his two children) decide to move to Philadelphia on the advice of Emily’s cousin, Winston (a freed Black man passing as White), and are welcomed by the Ellises, a free Black family. ![]() The book is a family drama, set a little before Frank J. His book was published in 1857 in London, when he accompanied his wife, Mary Webb, on a speaking tour. Webb, a Mixed-race man from Philadelphia. The Garies and Their Friends was written by Frank J. English![]() ![]() ![]() Now this story does seem to largely take place from the POV of one Mickey Featherstone and is about his journey through the Hells Kitchen Irish Mob so yes you will hear about the history of the Hells Kitchen Irish gangs as well as some information about the infamous Mickey Spillane as well as Jimmy Coonan but this is by large an account of Mickey Featherstone's life and trials. I myself was caught off guard by some of the casual descriptions of brutality that took place in Hells Kitchen at the time as well as the trust that these violent gangsters had in other people in the community to help cover up their crimes. But the listener could be forgiven for occasionally mistaking some of these stories for what they see on tv or on Netflix.
